When antibiotics help
Antibiotics are not needed for most sore throats because viruses are common. They are considered when signs point to a bacterial cause and you are likely to benefit. Your safety and recovery guide the decision.
What you can do now
- Use paracetamol or ibuprofen if suitable for you
- Drink plenty of fluids and rest your voice
- Try warm drinks with honey if you are over one year old
- Use saline or simple lozenges for comfort
- Avoid smoking and smoky places
