MMR protection for all ages

MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella. These viruses spread easily through coughs and close contact. Two doses provide strong, long lasting protection for most people across all ages.

Children are offered MMR at 12 months, then at around 3 years 4 months. Adults who missed doses can catch up at any time. Travellers should check they have two documented doses before trips.

Side effects are usually mild. You may get a sore arm, a mild fever, or a light rash. A fever can appear about a week after the vaccine. Serious allergic reactions are rare. Tell us about allergies before your appointment.

MMR is a live vaccine. It is not given in pregnancy or for people with some health conditions that affect the immune system. If you are unwell with a high temperature, wait until you recover.

All children are offered two doses. Adults without two documented doses should catch up, especially if travelling or working in close contact settings.

  • When do children get MMR?

The first dose is at 12 months. The second dose is at around 3 years 4 months for reliable, long term protection.

  • Can adults have MMR?

Yes. If you missed doses, you can have two doses at least one month apart to complete protection.

  • Is the MMR vaccine safe?

Yes. Side effects are usually mild, like a sore arm, fever or a light rash. Serious reactions are rare.

  • Can I have MMR if I am pregnant?

No. Do not have MMR during pregnancy. Avoid becoming pregnant for one month after the vaccine and speak to us for personal advice.

  • What if I had measles before?
