What you need to know

Hepatitis B affects the liver. It spreads through blood, semen and vaginal fluids. The chance of getting it in the UK is low. Vaccination reduces your risk, especially if you travel or have other risks.

Babies receive hepatitis B as part of the routine six in one schedule at eight, twelve and sixteen weeks. Babies at higher risk receive extra doses at birth and four weeks. A further dose is given at twelve months or via a new schedule at eighteen months.

Adults usually need vaccination only if at higher risk. Risks include travel to higher risk areas, multiple sexual partners, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs and close contacts. Some jobs and certain health conditions also raise risk.

You can get vaccinated at pharmacies with travel health services, travel clinics and some GP surgeries. Work related vaccines should be arranged by your employer. We provide private vaccination for eligible adults and older children.

You need at least three doses for best protection. Doses are usually one month apart. An accelerated course can give three doses within twenty one days with a fourth dose at twelve months after the first.

Booster doses are not routine for everyone. They are usually needed only for specific situations, such as some healthcare workers, people with kidney failure or after certain exposures. We advise based on your risk and blood tests.

Most adults need three doses for best protection, usually one month apart. An accelerated three dose course with a fourth dose at twelve months may be used for faster protection.
