What the vaccine does?

Typhoid is a serious infection spread through contaminated food and water. Vaccination reduces your risk if you are visiting higher risk regions in Asia, Africa, or parts of Central and South America. You should still follow strict food and water precautions.

Two vaccine types are used in the UK. A single injection provides protection for up to three years. Oral capsules are an option for some travellers. A combined vaccine with hepatitis A may be suitable. We will advise on the best option for your trip and health.

Protection is not complete. Good hygiene remains essential. Wash hands before eating. Drink sealed bottled water. Avoid ice unless you are sure the source is safe. Choose food that is freshly cooked and served hot. Peel fruit yourself where possible.

Book early where you can. Aim for vaccination at least 2 to 4 weeks before departure. We can still help if you are travelling sooner. Our South Ealing team serves Ealing, Acton, Hanwell, Brentford, and West London with clear advice and careful screening.

Anyone travelling to places where typhoid is common should consider it. We check your destination and plans to confirm if it is recommended.

  • How long does protection last?

Protection from the injectable vaccine lasts around three years. A booster is advised if you remain at ongoing risk.

Aim to book at least one month before you go. We can still vaccinate closer to departure if needed.

  • Do I still need food and water precautions?

  • Are there side effects?

Most side effects are mild, such as a sore arm, headache, or a low fever. We explain what to expect and when to seek help.
